Heidi Scheer - 3rd Runner-Up
1. I am a strong believer that autism is treatable and recovery is possible. When my son was four, he was diagnosed with autism. After nine years of intensive therapies and protocols, he no longer qualified for the clinical diagnosis of autism. Today, he laughs and learns along side his typical peers. He is our family's greatest teaching example of faith, perseverance and courage. "For with God nothing shall be impossible." Luke 1:37
2. Over the past twenty years, I have performed as an illusionist’s assistant with my husband. Together, we have educated tens of thousands of children throughout the midwest on subjects such as bully proofing, conflict resolution and diversity. Our feature article, “Including Children with Special Needs in Live Shows,” has been published in three international magazines, as well as presented in a live lecture in Tel Aviv, Israel, for entertainers from all over the world.
3. In 2008, I co-wrote a film (seen in over 16 countries) documenting my son’s journey through the autism spectrum. As a result, I have co-chaired two international autism conferences, received proclamations from the Governors of New Jersey and Michigan, toured the Autism Partnership school in Hong Kong, and met with Senators in Washington, D.C., regarding tougher laws for toxic chemicals in children’s products on behalf of The Michigan Network for Children’s Environmental Health.
4. In 2010, I had the honor of being chosen by the Chairman of the Autism Hope Alliance to be one of four Regional AHA Heroes in charge of presenting lectures for their community outreach programs. This collaborative lecture series with Generation Rescue and Talk About Curing Autism Now informs parents on the subjects of “Diet and Digestion,” “The Road to Progress and Recovery” and “Understanding Options for ASD.” Education is key in helping our children.
